DNA Test Shows Pantelides Turkish, Not Greek
DNA Test Shows Pantelides Turkish, Not Greek
Lost Job at Greek Restaurant; Might Convert to Islam
Annapolis (SPP) – As if 2017 wasn’t tough enough on former Annapolis Mayor Mike Pantelides, he got some upsetting news the other day when his DNA results came back from 23andme, the popular DNA testing company. Turns out, he isn’t Greek after all.
“Man, I don’t know what to say. The whole thing has been devastating,” Pantelides said when reached for comment. “Here all this time I was told my family came from Cyprus, which is ethnically Greek, and this test is telling me that I’m half Irish and half Turkish. How the hell did that happen?”
The discovery of his Turkish ancestry was troubling to Pantelides given the long history of tension and conflict between the Greeks and Turks. “Growing up Greek, we were always taught the Turks were the bad guys. Now I just don’t know what to think,” Pantelides said.
Pantelides stated that after he shared his results on Facebook, word quickly got around the community. He was fired from from Chris’s Charcoal Pit, a Greek owned restaurant in Annapolis, where he recently started working as a dishwasher. He also was excommunicated from the Greek Orthodox Church.
“First my boss called me and told me I’m not welcome there anymore. I’m banned from the business. I can’t even get a gyro there. Then my priest at Saints Constantine and Helen called me and said I wasn’t welcome there either. He said I was excommunicated. I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. Maybe I will convert to Islam,” a dejected sounding Pantelides said. Over 99% of Turks are Muslim.
Pantelides indicated that he was considering hiring a lawyer to sue Chris’s Charcoal Pit for discrimination or an online satire site for defamation.
